AHS CROSS COUNTRY

By: Ava Stratton

Cross country is one of many sports that Albuquerque High School has to offer. One captain on the cross country team is Emily Schellkopf, a senior who is number one on the Girls Varsity team. Schoellkopf is a talented runner and has “been running on the cross country team since sophomore year.” She also runs track and field and has been doing so since her freshman year. As a team captain, Schoellkopf has to know how to lead the team, but she also needs to continue to set her own goals and be a good, independent runner. Her main goal this season is to “place in the State meet since it’s [her] last year. [She] would also really like to create lasting memories for everyone.” while this is Schoellkopf’s goal, she could accomplish it, as according to MileSplit NM, last St. Pius Super Cinco XC Challenge, she placed number three out of many girls from twenty-one different schools. With a time of 16:09.60, she was only 7.69 seconds behind second place Leah Futey. While Emily Schoellkopf is a great addition, she has a lot to say about the team.

For this 2019 fall season, Schoellkopf likes what she sees and thinks that everyone will be committed. Unfortunately, she says “we lost some key runners this year. So adjusting to that has been difficult, but we’ve compensated well.” Dealing with the sport itself, Schoellkopf says that her “favorite thing about cross country would be the people... we endure the worst workouts together and we still come back for more.” She feels like the most important thing to do is make good memories for the entire team. These good memories would not be created without a coach.

Coach Marconett has been coaching the cross country team at Albuquerque High for twenty-one years. He originally started with the team so that he could coach his daughter who then didn’t join the team, but ended up running her senior year. Coach Marconett had also ran track in high school, and was a gymnast in college. He became interested in running because it was an easy way for exercise. Now, he passes his knowledge of running onto the team.

While Marconett has been at Albuquerque High, the team has been pretty successful. He says “if you define success as going from twelve to thirty kids and bringing times from thirty to seventeen minutes, then yes, we have been successful.” Coach Marconett also explains how last year, both teams placed third in state, the first cross country trophy Albuquerque High had seen. Coach Marconett hopes for students to attend all of the races this season, especially the Albuquerque High invite at Mesa del Sol. This year's team schedule can be accessed on the Albuquerque High School website so that students can come show some bulldog pride.

AHS Cheerleader Tryouts

By: Erick Padilla

Believe it or not cheerleading wasn’t always the stereotypical game for girls. Back in 1898 when cheerleading was first born, the first cheerleading team was composed by six male students in the university of Minnesota when it was first called “yell leaders” as stated by varisity.com. But, times change. And now it’s a sport for everyone.

The Albuquerque High School cheerleaders recently had their cheerleading tryouts. Many of the people who tried out for cheerleading made it to the team. One of the cheerleaders who made it into the team was Mayra Quintana. She said “it doesn’t take just anyone to make it into the cheerleading team”. To her the perfect cheerleader is someone who has dedication, someone who puts effort and emotion into cheerleading. And to me I doubt she’s wrong. Not only do you have to be dedicated to this. But they have to the things that they love with power.

The Albuquerque High School cheerleader team has existed for over 20 years. The Albuquerque high tryouts where held on August 22. As of now the Varsity and JV teams are thriving. They have been performing at assemblies, and at sports games. They are the some of the most stunning cheerleaders ever. The first time I ever watched the cheerleaders perform was during the first spirit assembly that Albuquerque high school held. “ They where only practicing yet they looked amazing.” Stated Miguel Angel.

The Albuquerque High School cheerleaders are some of the best cheerleaders. I didn't see what the cheerleaders had to do on their tryouts, but I am sure that whatever they did to get onto the cheerleading team was very difficult, and the many who were selected to be on the cheerleading team had to try very hard to do any of the drills to make it to the team. So much so that the cheerleading tryouts made some of the future cheerleaders feel nervous. But most of them had nothing to worry about as they now are able to stand on those mats and jump into the air like there is no tomorrow.

Girls Volleyball

By Nilay Jones

The AHS girls volleyball team this. year has been doing an amazing job defending the Bulldogs. After all three of the teams beat Del Norte at the first game of the season, we knew this team was going to be special. On the following Thursday, the Varsity went up against Atrisco and beat them as well. This was an especially important win for our team, because Del Norte has beaten us often in the past. Senior Player Savannah Garcia has been playing for eight years. She said, " My uncle inspired me . . . once I started playing, I just fell in love." She plays on the Varsity team, and is known for her ability to roll around and pop right back up with the ball instantly. "I've never seen someone hit the ground . . . and pop up that fast" her uncle Manuel mentoned when asked if he had ever been to one of her games. Savannah sports several bruises, but is as full of fighting Bulldog spirit as ever.

September 13-15 was the Volleyball Metro tournament, which all 13 varsity volleyball APS programs participated in. Rounding out the 16 team bracket this year were Cleveland, Rio Rancho, and Sandia Prep as per the official Metro Tournament. The Boys soccer team took home the metro tournament trophy a little while ago, and the girls volleyball team gave it thir best shot. With all the success of the volleyball teams this year, and fierce players like Savannah Garcia, we powered our way into sixth. The tournament took place at Del Norte High School this year. Thanks, those who gathered in support!!!

Volleyball season is almost over, but all of the Bulldogs on the volleyball team are proud of their perforance this year. They won more than they lost. And , this year has been an overall awesome year to be a Bulldogs fan. Wherever I go, people ask me, did the Bulldogs win? And most of the time, it is my honor to say "yes!".
