While planning comprehension lessons for the anchor text Home of the Brave, we focused on character development. Throughout the novel, Katherine Applegate uses characters to present critical issues, topics, and themes. Jennifer Serravallo's The Reading Strategies Book: Your Everything Guide to Developing Skilled Readers was used to guide the lessons that were created.
