Spring 2023
Serghel Woldesus
She started the year with a ride along with the Sheriff of Watauga County where she learned about the county jail and the law enforcement control center.
She also connected with a local Christian youth community, sharing faith and building community. With this group, she went on hikes, rode horses, and ate her first s’more.
She is a valued participant in the International Friendship Program. With her local friends, she volunteered with the Immigrant Connection group: a local non-profit network that provides free immigration and legal service to those who need it.
Emma Linnett
She joined club basketball even though she had never played before. She trained every Tuesday and Thursday plus some extra sessions with the team. Through these trainings plus tournaments and overnight excursions including staying in the homes of Americans and eating dinner together, she built solid relationships with the team and helped foster community.
She also worked in campus dining. She demonstrated yet again that she was a team player by covering shifts for coworkers and working multiple events beyond her planned 8 hours per week. She used her knowlege and experience to start helping others, as coworkers did for her when she started. It is another area where she is demonstrating leadership, team work, and community building.
She has also been an active member in the IInternational Friendship Program, meeting regularly with her local friends, sharing cultural understandings, and making memories.
