Project 1: 4 day mapping project (Dec 31-Jan 3)
geologic mapping
focus on regional stratigraphy, geologic history, faulting
remote camping on undeveloped BLM land
Project 2: 3.5 day mapping project (Jan 4-7)
mapping Miocene-present strata near Death Valley
focus on modern plate tecotnics and manifestation in deformation of young rocks
camping in park at established campground - access to facilities - Furnace Creek Ranch
Geotourism: 2 days of touring - field notes & measurements required (Jan 7-9)
Possible desinations (pending road access):
Copper Canyon Turtleback, Badwater, Black Mountains fault zone
Marble Canyon, Panamint Valley, Towne Pass, Mesquite Dunes
Owens Lake, 1872 Owens Lake EQ escarpments, Views of the Sierra Nevada
January 9th Return to Las Vegas late afternoon - return vans by 8 pm (stay in LV in hotel)
January 10th Fly home and be ready for start of classes Jan 12
There will be about 5 days of camping in an established campground and 5 days of camping in unestablished campgrounds - we will spend the final night in Las Vegas before folks fly home.
During Spring Semester: Meetings on Mondays 12-3 pm
January 12th - Recap of field work - discussion of final deliverables- upload videos on map digitization
January 26th - Help workshop on digital geologic mapping and 3D model-building
February 2nd - Student presentations - Digital maps & 3D models Project 1
February 9th - Student presentations - Digital maps & 3D models Project 2
February 16th- Final projects and reports due and end of course - no meeting required.
