Class overview
This course is designed as an introductory course for Environmental Science majors or as an elective for those students who are interested in learning more about environmental science in general. Please note that if you took the Advanced Placement Environmental Science course in High School and scored a 3, 4, or 5 on the exam, you are eligible for credit for this course and may not need to take it. Please talk to your advisor about this. The aim of GES1010 is to introduce you to the interdisciplinary nature of environmental science by studying human-environment interactions in Earth’s physical and biological systems (freshwater, marine, coastal, atmospheric). We will explore environmental issues around the globe through the lenses of ecology, energy transfer, economics, global climate change, and sustainability. The course also integrates local and global cultural perspectives, ranging from big trophy hunting to anthropogenic climate change.
