Develop as a clinical scientist in Appalachian State University’s Clinical Psychology doctoral program. We welcome research-oriented applicants whose interests connect with anxiety, mindfulness, physical activity, psychological flexibility and avoidance, or mechanisms of psychological change.
Explore our current studies and selected publications, and consider the questions you would like to investigate. Applicants should be committed to advancing clinical science and applying evidence-based approaches in clinical settings.

Prior research experience is not required. App State students at every stage of undergraduate study are encouraged to apply. We value dependability, care with details, and a willingness to learn.
Take part in study preparation, participant recruitment, data collection, literature review, and communication of findings, with training and feedback as you learn.
The commitment
GPA of 3.2 or higher · At least two consecutive semesters
Lab meetings: Tuesdays, 5:00–6:30 PM
New RAs typically register for 3 credits of PSY 4001 and spend about 9 hours per week, including lab meeting. If 3 credits are not feasible, discuss an appropriate arrangement before finalizing enrollment.

Turn a research interest into a sustained project.
An honors thesis offers an opportunity to develop a focused research question with Dr. Broman-Fulks and connect your interests with the lab’s work.
Dr. Broman-Fulks supervises honors projects for students who have completed at least one semester in the lab before beginning their thesis. Discuss your interests and timeline early so that you can plan your preparation and a feasible project.
If you are new to the lab, indicate your honors thesis interest on your RA application. Current lab members can contact Dr. Broman-Fulks directly to discuss potential questions and the timing of thesis work.
