PROFESSOR
DEPARTMENT OF PSYCHOLOGY
Josh Broman-Fulks, Ph.D. is a clinical psychologist and professor in the Psychology Department at Appalachian State University. He earned his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of Southern Mississippi and completed a clinical internship at the Medical University of South Carolina/Department of Veterans Affairs Consortium, where he specialized in anxiety and traumatic stress treatment.
Dr. Broman-Fulks’ research program focuses on understanding how lifestyle behaviors, particularly physical exercise and mindfulness meditation, can aid in the prevention and treatment of anxiety-related problems. Grounded in a contextual-behavioral science framework, his work aims to advance the scientific understanding of behaviors that influence anxiety, avoidance, and overall psychological health. His lab explores predictive factors and intervention strategies that promote functional living and improved mental well-being.
Current research projects in Dr. Broman-Fulks’ lab are examining the efficacy of various mindfulness-based interventions and investigating how expectancies, including the placebo effect, shape outcomes related to mindfulness practices. Dr. Broman-Fulks generally accepts one new clinical psychology graduate student each year and prioritizes candidates with a strong commitment to research and a passion for applied behavioral science. Graduate students in his lab will find dynamic research opportunities aimed at advancing innovative, evidence-based approaches to mental health care.
