Lunch + Recess Radio - We had two awesome trips into the studio - see pictures in the latest upload.
Content Rotations: Students from 125 are in Mr. Parker's class for Social Studies.
Language Arts - We have jumped back a century and a half into the Civil War era. We started with a look at life before the war and the stratification of classes in this country. Followed that with the causes of the war including the election of 1860. Now we have started reading together The Boys War. It is an exploration of the stories of young men who went off to fight in the 1860s and the impact of that experience on survivors.
Math - 5th Multiplying decimals, 4th Start of Unit 4 - Lesson 18 - Comparing fractions.
Save the Date - Ockley Green Open House March 9th
As we approach the transition to middle school, we want to ensure that our 5th grade students and their families are well-prepared for this exciting new chapter. Ockley Green Middle School is hosting an Open House at the middle school on Wednesday, March 9th from 6:00-7:30 pm. This event is a wonderful opportunity for you and your child to become familiar with the middle school environment, meet with teachers and staff, and get a sense of what to expect in 6th grade.
Please note that this is the only currently scheduled event for incoming 6th grade parents to visit the middle school, so we encourage you to make every effort to attend.
At this point, the only lottery school that Peninsula students are going to is DiVinci. Their Welcome Night is May 6th from 5-6pm. They will reach out directly with more information to students who were accepted.
Transition Timeline
March 3rd and March 10th - Classroom teachers will teach lessons in 5th grade classes about middle school readiness.
March 9th - Ockley Green open house. Primary information will come from middle school staff - I will recirculate as it is shared.
Week of March 17 (date tbd)Middle School Counselors will visit Peninsula to discuss class choices and forecast electives. I will share more information with 5th grade families when the time comes. Date TBD.
May 27th or 28 (tbd) - 5th graders visit Ockley Green on a field trip! Coordinating date with other feeders, will finalize soon.
If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to reach out to our 5th grade team or our school counselor at scarranza@pps.net
New Tasks
Old Tasks
If you are able to donate any healthy snacks for the whole class, these donations are always GREATLY appreciated! Thank you to the folks who have already sent some along!!!
Lunch + Recess Radio - Coming soon - Our first in-studio, live broadcast!
Content Rotations: Students from 125 are back in homeroom for our science content. We are diving into Modeling Matter: The Chemistry of Food. In the role of food scientists, students work to identify a potentially hazardous food dye in a food coloring mixture, then to create a good-tasting and visually appealing salad dressing. They engage in hands-on investigations and use physical and digital models to gather evidence about mixtures at the observable scale and at the scale of molecules. They develop visual models and write explanations about mixtures, including whether they are likely to change or remain stable.
Language Arts - We are halfway through The Thief of Always, by Clive Barker. Our latest task is writing a "exploded moment" story about an invented character interacting with Harvey at the Holiday House.
Math - 5th Decimal Place Value, 4th Start of Unit 3 - Lesson 13 - Using Multiplication to Convert Units of Measure

New Tasks
After break, we spend a good deal of time reviewing schoolwide and classroom expectations. Please support these efforts by reminding your kiddo:
Electronics at school - off and out of sight. This includes smart phones and watches.
Toys need to stay at home - a lot of our kiddos got fun stuff over break. Make sure those items are not coing to class.
Old Tasks
Help your kiddo manage their blue kid-mail folder, which comes home every Friday and should come back to school on Monday. If you are having any trouble with the turnaround time, let me know and you can send it back later in the week. I am missing a lot of folders - check with your kiddo about getting it emptied and returned.
If you are able to donate any healthy snacks for the whole class, these donations are always GREATLY appreciated! Thank you to the folks who have already sent some along!!!

I will leave this episode in rotation as a rerun until we get another one ready. That means... if you missed, you can catch it again Tuesday, Dec. 23! I'll send a reminder.

Lunch + Recess Radio - Our first show aired last week and it was a great success! Thanks to all the folks who listened in and sent a comment. It was such a blast to hear our kids on the airwaves and to get such a cool, ecclectic mix of music and jokes. I will leave this episode in rotation as a rerun until we get another one ready. Thatmeans... if you missed it last week, you can catch it again next Tuesday! I'll send a reminder.

Language Arts - Culture and Conflict - We are nearly done with "The Birchbark House," by Louise Erdrich. It's a wonderfully evocative story about the life of an Ojibwe family on a tiny island in Lake Superior told from the perspective of Omakayas, a 7-year-old child. We have been exploring how an author might choose names for characters that reveals something about who they are. Ask your kiddo about the names: Neewo, Nokomis, Old Tallow and Angelina. But especially Big Pinch. We are also working on writing an analysis of how she has changed from the beginning to the end of the story.

Two weeks in and we are already switching things up! Everything has been awesome in room 125 so far. So awesome, in fact, that we have decided to invite some new folks to join us. In a last minute pivot, we decided to departmentalize our iReady lessons, whech means that all the fifth graders head over to Mr. Parker in 123 during math and all his fourth graders join us in 125. We find that it allows us to give attention to one lesson at a time, rather than trying to switch back and forth between two groups.

We just wrapped up our first week together and have been having a great time getting to know eachother. It's a new experience, working in a mixed-age classroom, but the kids have demonstrated their resiliance and flexability and are rapidly adapting to the new arrangements.
It's been hot in 125, but I suppose the early release Friday makes up for it.
So far we have visited all of our specials and learned and practiced a bunch of our classroom and school procedures.
This week are jumping into some new units
Science - Patterns of Earth & Sky
