About OBOB

Oregon Battle of the Books (OBOB) is a statewide reading and trivia competition program.  It is sponsored by the Oregon Association of School Libraries (OASL) and the Oregon Library Association (OLA), in conjunction with a Library Services and Technology Act grant through the Oregon State Library.

Each year, OBOB chooses a list of books for each of three grade divisions (3rd to 5th, 6th to 8th, and 9th to 12th) and writes trivia questions for each booklist.  Teams of two to four students read the books, discuss them, and prepare to compete in "battles."  During a battle, two teams face off in answering trivia questions in a quiz-show format.  OBOB battles occur within Local (school), Regional, and State level tournaments.  Winners of Local tournaments progress to Regional tournaments, and winners of Regional tournaments progress to the State tournament.

Students typically spend the earlier part of the school year preparing with their teams.  Then school/Local level tournaments take place in January and February, Regional tournaments take place in March, and the State tournament takes place shortly after the Regionals.

At Arleta, we model our OBOB season and battles after the Regional and State Tournament rules. This way, our students have more time and guidance to practice, experience more battles, and, for the winning team, are ready to participate in the Regional Tournament.  Students in grades 3, 4, and 5 are able to compete in the 3rd - 5th Grade Division of Oregon Battle of the Books.  While OBOB is a competition, it should also be a lot of fun. Each team is responsible for reading the same set of 16 books while learning to work together, and supporting each other through both wins and losses.

Sportsmanship and learning to cooperate with peers is of the utmost importance, so please model this for our young people.

Arleta's Teacher-Librarian, Treasa Street, our new Library Assistant, Jen Gusman, and two parent Co-Chairs, Leslie Nordella and Racheal Gottgetreu, will facilitate the following this year:
