Advanced vs. On-Level Pace of Instruction
ADV: Instruction in advanced science classes may move at a faster pace to accommodate the advanced level of understanding of the students. This faster pace allows time for more in-depth exploration of scientific concepts.
OL: Instruction in an on-level science class progresses at a moderate pace, ensuring that all students have the opportunity to grasp foundational concepts before moving on to more complex topics. The instruction has a high focus on student understanding of grade level concepts only.
Should I take Advanced or On-Level?
An advanced student should be prepared to complete projects at home and have a higher workload than on-level classes. You should have a desire to learn beyond the grade level content. An advanced student should be prepared to engage in collaboration in which all students are expected to hold high-level discussions, complete critical thinking exercises and participate in problem-solving activities. There will be a greater emphasis on student-led investigations and research projects.
While On-level classes will still engage in collaboration and student-led investigations it will be heavily facilitated by the teacher. Students in on-level classes will be taught the skill set for completing scientific investigations on their own throughout the year, instead of being expected to already have that knowledge at the start of the year.
Recommendation:
While all students are welcome to enroll in advanced science, we have found that students with the following characteristics experience the greatest level of success in an advanced setting.
Academic achievement: The student consistently achieves high scores on any science formal assessment.
Proficiency in Reading: The student retains a "Masters" level on the Reading STAAR
Proficiency in Math: The student retains a "Meets" or "Maters" level on the Math STAAR. A higher understanding of foundational math skills will be essential in an advanced class. Students are expected to know these foundational math skills upon day 1 in advanced science.
Strong time management and prioritization skills: The student should demonstrate the ability to manage time effectively, organize and prioritize tasks to successfully meet deadlines and commitments.
Work ethic and Self-motivation: The student should have a strong work ethic, willingness to work hard, and self-motivate when faced with challenging task or projects.
Focus and Independence: The student should have the ability to stay focused, avoid distractions and work independently.
Teamwork: The student should be able to effectively collaborate with peers and communicate ideas clearly and contribute actively to group discussions and projects. They should recognize the value of collective effort and demonstrate respect for diverse perspectives within a team setting.
Creativity and Curiosity: Exhibits creativity, curiosity and inquisitiveness, demonstrating a genuine interest in exploring scientific concepts beyond the confines of the classroom.
Classroom Dynamics
Advanced Classroom setting: Advanced science classes often foster a collaborative learning environment where students engage in high-level discussions, critical thinking exercises, and advanced problem-solving activities. There may be a greater emphasis on student-led investigations and research projects.
On-Level Classroom setting: In regular science classes, the focus is on providing comprehensive instruction to a diverse group of learners. Teachers may employ a variety of instructional methods to accommodate different learning styles and abilities.
