6.8 Force, motion, and energy. The student knows force and motion are related to potential and kinetic energy. The student is expected to:
6.8A compare and contrast potential and kinetic energy;
6.8B identify and describe the changes in position, direction, and speed of an object when acted upon by unbalanced forces;
6.8C calculate average speed using distance and time measurements;
6.8D measure and graph changes in motion; and
6.8E investigate how inclined planes can be used to change the amount of force to move an object.
ENERGY - The ability of a system to do work. Energy is required for changes to happen within a system.
POTENTIAL ENERGY - Energy that is stored in a system or object.
KINETIC ENERGY - Energy of motion.
SYSTEM - A group of interacting or interdependent elements forming a complex whole, as in all the factors or variables in an environment, or all the variables that might affect a science experiment.
TOTAL ENERGY - All energy—potential and kinetic—within a specific system.
JOULE - A unit used to measure energy.
