Matilda:
At home. Matilda wore a red headband, red dress and white undershirt with a large collar. This was an homage to the original movie wherein she wore a red headband as well. It was important to have her home costume to be drastically different from what she wore at school. Her dress, shirt and headband were able to be sourced from our own costume closet, which meant it was no extra expense to us.
Matching with her home costume, Matilda wore a navy headband with her school costume. This helped her stand out from the other school kids because her head piece was solely navy, not plaid. Other than that, she wore what every other student wore. The school uniform consists of a plaid gray, white, and navy skirt, a white button-down shirt, a navy cardigan with a patch added on, and a tie with a zipper along the back to allow for her quick changes. She wore jazz shoes to allow her to dance, but wore frilly white socks to remind the audience that she is still a little girl.
Miss Agatha Trunchbull:
From her first appearance, Agatha Trunchbull wore a brown tartan dress with brown buttons, black bias tape, medals, small badges, and large 80's-style shoulder pads. Matching the brown and black, our actor wore brown tights and long black combat boots. She also wore a brown women's tie around her neck along with her whistle. Around her waist is a 80's inspired large brown belt. To make it more her aesthetic, we added rusty chains, school keys, and a magnifying glass.
The Trunchbull's gym outfit is a gray matching sweatshirt and shorts with black bias tape lining the two pieces. The sweatshirt reads out "Olympics 1969" to coincide with Trunchbull's past career in hammer throwing. She wears a whistle around her neck for the children and her belt on top of her sweatshirt.
Miss Honey:
Miss Honey's costume captures her gentle and caring nature with a soft, vintage-inspired 1980's teacher aesthetic. She starts off the show in a white button up with a denim vest and a floral skirt, tied together with a brown belt and brown mary-janes. The denim vest is embellished with dragonfly beaded embroidery to give off the idea of a vibrant, kindhearted teacher like Miss Honey. The skirt is pink with little dark pink and white flowers to match the white shirt and white lace on the vest.
We chose to add a second outfit for her to change into for the second act. She adorns a denim dress with customized baby pink heart buttons. She wears the denim overall skirt layered with a matching denim vest, paired with a delicate floral blouse in pastel tones.
Mr. Wormwood:
In the script, Mr. Wormwood accidentally dyes his hair green, so his costume is also green to correlate with his hair color. His everyday suit is green plaid with orange accents to follow his color scheme which consists of green and black. His fedora for Act I was a similar green to his suit to differentiate from his “Telly” costume.
Mr. Wormwood’s “Telly” costume is a bedazzled emerald suit with emerald green, lime green, and silver gems. His suit also had silver woven into the fabric to sparkle all over. His fedora and bow tie matched his “Telly” suit with the sparkly fabric and the gems.
For “Going To Spain”, Mr. Wormwood wore a much more relaxed ensemble as he was in a rush to get out of town. However, he also wore items that reminded the audience that he was still Matilda’s dad. For example, he wore a very stereotypical Hawaiian shirt and he wore socks and sandals together.
Mrs. Wormwood:
Mrs. Wormwood’s costume was inspired by the striking colors of the 80s, along with the rich patterns that were prevalent in the 1980s. To include these themes, she wore a hot pink satin shirt with a velvet, cheetah print skirt. Keeping “Loud” in mind, her skirt had a Velcro closure to allow her skirt to purposefully be ripped off. She wore the same shirt for Lou, but changed into a bedazzled hot pink, black and silver skirt with the same fringe as Rudolpho pants.
Her “Going To Spain” mirrored her regular costume with a hot pink shirt and a tropical skirt. Her main colors are hot pink and black and it was important to us to continue those colors into all of her costumes, even her vacation outfit.
Michael Wormwood:
The costume chosen for Michael was a neon green, blue, and yellow shiny windbreaker suit to tie into the 80's theme. To match this, we paired the suit with yellow sweatbands and white Reebok tennis shoes. Later on for his "Going to Spain" outfit, he simply unzipped his jacket and wore a button down Hawaiian shirt to match the vacation feel.
For his "Telly" costume, he wore a green sweatsuit with bedazzled white stripes on the sleeves and legs. Michael also swapped his sweatbands for a green baseball hat with his initials M.W. bedazzled in silver jewels on the front.
Mrs. Phelps:
Mrs. Phelps' costume features a cool-toned wrap skirt in blue, purple, and green, paired with a simple blouse. A sheer green shawl drapes over her shoulders, and she wears large glasses with a beaded chain. A patterned headscarf adds to her whimsical charm. Her costume was our idea of Matilda's librarian she is comforted by, and we wanted to create the essence of a storyteller.
The Escapologist:
He wears a black shirt with delicate lace trim and billowing sleeves, paired with red suit pants and a deep red cummerbund. A teal bow tie, adorned with bedazzled stars, mirrors the vibrant teal gloves he wears. His cape is lined with the same starry embellishments, while the outer layer shimmers with holographic teal fabric. Topping off his ensemble, a red hat with a shining star completes his clothing ensemble.
The Acrobat:
The Acrobat wears a vibrant red romper adorned with black lace trim and deep red accents. The Acrobat also wears teal tights to complement her matching finger-less gloves, which shimmer with bedazzled white and silver stars. A white scarf, covered in matching sparkling embellishments, drapes around her neck given to her from The Escapologist, completing the look.
Rudolpho:
The character Rudolpho is a Latin dancer in the 1980s. We were inspired by the vibrant colors of the time period, while keeping the typical Latin dancer costume in mind. Both Mrs. Wormwood and Rudolpho wore hot pink, black and silver. For his beginning scenes, he wore black warm up pants that had snaps along the legs to cover his pink fringe pants underneath. His black pants were ripped away in the scene before “Loud”. He had a black mesh shirt that was bedazzled along the collar, lapel, sleeves and bottom in both pink and silver. To continue to match Mrs. Wormwood, he wore a satin neck piece with a rose to the side.
