Bottle Farm

In science, we learnt that plastic bottles contribute to air pollution because plastic materials are made from harmful fossil fuels. On average, 'one million plastic bottles are sold every minute' and many of them are not recycled. To tackle this problem, we engineered Bottle Farms by reusing plastic bottles and planting seeds to reduce air pollution in our local area.

Bottle Farms are useful because they can be stuck on a window or on a wall, which means that everyone in London can grow plants without a garden. We know how important it is to help create sustainable cities with access to green spaces (SDG 11) to promote healthier lives and good well-being (SDG 3) and to protect Life on Land (SDG 13).

Forest For Change

At Somerset House, the Forest for Change exhibition is the centrepiece of this year's London Design Biennale. We were so inspired by 'The Global Goals Pavilion' that we decided to create a 'Forest for Change' in our school playground to showcase our local tree legacy and pledges. As members of the Camden community, we have partnered with Camden Forest 2025 to help them on their mission to plant 2,025 trees by the year 2025. We have taken Climate Action (SDG 13) to improve Life of Land (SDG 15) and have promoted healthier lives and well-being for all (SDG 3) by planting trees and assigning 'Tree Guardians' to look after them. Pupils and staff loved walking around our installation because green spaces reduce stress and make us feel more positive.

Tree Wrap - Yayoi Kusama

Our woodland tree wrap installation was inspired by Kusama's 2021 exhibition, 'Kusama: Cosmic Nature.' Just like us, she covered trees in the New York Botanical Garden in polka dot fabric. We used white material and paint to design multi-coloured polka dots. We loved reimagining her work by exploring shape, colour and space while creating this colossal installation for our STEAM exhibition.

Art - Yayoi Kusama

We have explored the work of Japanese artist, Yayoi Kusama, as part of our STEAM project. Even though Kusama makes lots of different types of art, such as paintings, sculptures, live performances and huge installations, they all have one thing in common - DOTS! We learnt that she is an abstract impressionist, which means that she creates dreamlike impressions of the natural world around her. We designed our own polka dot artwork to create impressions of silver birches and holly trees, which were the main focus of our STEAM project. Kusama believes that 'our earth is only one polka dot among a million stars in the cosmos', just like our local tree legacy feeds into a wider network of global climate action.

AirBeam

Air Casting

In science, we were curious about SDG 13, Climate Action. As scientists, we designed a fair test experiment to measure air quality in our local area. We applied our knowledge that trees capture carbon to make predictions before conducting our experiment. We used the results to compare our school woodland area with Torriano Avenue. We’ve used this knowledge to see whether the trees we’ve planted, as part of our local legacy, are helping to control air pollution in our playground. We love knowing that we are change-makers and have made a positive impact on the air quality at Torriano Primary School.
