The Security Council was given the responsibility of maintaining international peace and security. All member states of the UN are obligated to carry out decisions made by the Security Council (unlike decisions made by the General Assembly).
The Security Council has a total of 15 council members. Five countries hold permanent positions and veto power: the Russian Federation, China, the United Kingdom, France, and the United States. The other ten are elected for two year terms by the General Assembly. Decisions made by the Security Council require nine ‘yes’ votes to be put in effect.
As part of the UN Security Council you will work with the other members and make resolutions to maintain peace. Whenever there is a threat to international peace, the Security Council is tasked with settling the dispute through peaceful means. It uses non-military measures such as arms embargoes, travel banks, and restrictions to protect against exploitation, and is a leader in counter-terrorism efforts
Most decisions made by the Security Council are reached by consensus. However, when a consensus is not possible, these decisions are put up to a vote.
Unlike other committees, the Security Council is comprised of a small group of people. During the simulation, there are fewer delegates in the room, creating a more personal environment. However, the amount of work does not decrease, as you must be able to think on your feet and work fast during the conference. We will not have as much time to prepare for discussion as other committees do.
This year, South Windsor High School will represent the Russian Federation in the Security Council.
