Beginner Band Frequently Asked Questions

Below you will find some frequently asked questions about being a member of the KMS Band. Por favor vea abajo para español.

Is 6th Grade the only chance to join band?

No! We believe in music education for all, and don’t want to impose any arbitrary barriers. BUT, you should know that most beginner students are in 6th grade, so if you are in 7th or 8th grade, many of the students will be younger than you. And while you will miss out on a 3-year band sequence from 6-8th grade, if you are willing to do the work and practice, you can still catch up and enjoy more performing opportunities the following year in the KMS Band or the C.E. King High School Band. 

Can I change my instrument in 7th grade?

Usually not.  There would not be time to catch you up on a year’s worth of learning another instrument.  There are opportunities to play specialty instruments in 7th & 8th. This is reserved for our hardest working students.

Does band cost money?  How much? What if I can’t afford it–do I just quit?

Yes, band is an investment.  We try to keep it as affordable as possible, and there are always ways to help as long as you communicate with the directors.  We do not want ANY child to miss out on band due to money. The amount of money depends on what instrument you play. Talk to a director-DO NOT QUIT!

I don’t know how to play an instrument or even how to read music!

You’re fine.  Neither does anyone else.  We will teach you literally EVERYTHING you need to know.

Are there boy and girl instruments?

No way!   Choose an instrument because you love it and because you’ll be good at it, not because of your gender.

When does the band practice?

 In 6th grade, you will be in a regular class every day for your instrument (flute class, trumpet class, etc).  They do not have after-school practice (except maybe one leading up to a concert). If you make it into a top band in 7th or 8th grade you will be expected to stay once a week. Many students are in more than one activity and (athletics, etc) and it works out just fine!

Do we march in parades?

No, not until high school, but we LOVE our KHS Panther Marching Band and we will get you ready for it at KMS!

Do we have concerts?

Yes!  Performing is one of the most exciting parts of being a musician!  6th graders play in a concert once in December and once in May.

Do new band students have to get out and go shop for their instrument and supplies?

You are welcome to go wherever you’d like as long as you get everything you need, but to make it easier we have some music stores who come to KMS for the Band Instrument Drive so that you can order what you need there.  Smaller things that have to be repurchased (like extra reeds, valve oil, cork grease, etc.) can be purchased any time from the band directors. We want to make it easy for you! We do ask that you only purchase from a reputable music store and that you do not purchase elsewhere without consulting a director first.  You don’t want to get a hold of a bad instrument, and they are out there!

Do we travel in band?

We take a spring trip every year!

¿La banda cuesta dinero? ¿Cuánto cuesta? ¿Qué sucede si no puedo pagarlo? ¿Acabo de dejarlo?

Sí, la banda es una inversión. Tratamos de mantenerlo lo más asequible posible, y siempre hay maneras de ayudar, siempre y cuando se comunique con los directores. No queremos que CUALQUIER niño se pierda de la banda debido al dinero. La cantidad de dinero depende de qué instrumento toque. Habla con un director, ¡NO DEJES!

¡No sé cómo tocar un instrumento o incluso cómo leer música!

Estás bien. Tampoco nadie más. Le enseñaremos literalmente TODO lo que necesita saber.

¿Hay instrumentos específicamente para niños o niñas?

¡De ninguna manera! Elige un instrumento porque lo amas y porque serás bueno en él, no por tu género.

¿Cuándo practica la banda?

 En 6 ° grado, estarás en una clase regular todos los días para tu instrumento (clase de flauta, clase de trompeta, etc.). No tienen práctica después de la escuela (excepto tal vez una que conduce a un concierto). Si logras llegar a la banda superior en séptimo u octavo grado, se esperará que te quedes una vez a la semana. Muchos estudiantes están en más de una actividad (atletismo, etc.) ¡y funciona muy bien!

¿Marchamos en los desfiles?

No, no hasta la secundaria, ¡pero AMAMOS a nuestra KHS Panther Marching Band y te prepararemos para ello en KMS!

¿Tenemos conciertos?

¡Sí! ¡Actuar es una de las partes más emocionantes de ser músico! Los alumnos de 6º grado tocan en un concierto una vez en diciembre y una vez en mayo.

¿Los nuevos estudiantes de la banda tienen que salir y comprar sus instrumentos y suministros?

Le invitamos a que vaya donde desee siempre y cuando obtenga todo lo que necesita, pero para hacerlo más fácil, tenemos algunas tiendas de música que vienen a KMS para la unidad de instrumentos de banda para que pueda pedir lo que necesita allí. Las cosas más pequeñas que tienen que ser recompradas (como juncos adicionales, aceite de válvula, grasa de corcho, etc.) se pueden comprar en cualquier momento de los directores de la banda. ¡Queremos que te sea más fácil! Le pedimos que solo compre en una tienda de música de buena reputación y que no compre en otro lugar sin antes consultar con un director. ¡No quieres agarrar un instrumento malo, y están ahí fuera!
