Welcome to the Reading Language Arts hub! Here, you will find the unit text that students are reading in each grade level, writing tasks, along with the corresponding learning goals for each text.

6th Grade Unit Text

Learning Goal: Students will read The Lightning Thief and practice analyzing important story elements such as:

plot
characters
setting,

while also making inferences about themes within the book and across other texts.

SCR Prompt: How do Percy’s internal responses reveal how he feels about himself?

Learning Goal: Students will read Shree Bose: Never Too Young to Change the Worldand practice analyzing characteristics and structural elements of informational text, including:

the controlling idea or thesis with supporting evidence
organizational patterns such as definition, classification, advantage, and disadvantage

as well as the authors use of print and graphic features.

ECR Prompt: Explain how the Google Science Fair impacted Shree Bose’s life.

Learning Goal: Students will read Everybody Jump and practice and practice analyzing characteristics and structural elements of informational text, including:

the controlling idea or thesis with supporting evidence
organizational patterns such as definition, classification, advantage, and disadvantage

7th Grade Unit Text

Learning Goal: Students will read "Harrison Bergeron" and practice analyzing important story elements such as:

plot
characters
setting,

while also making inferences about themes within the book and across other texts.

SCR Prompt: What do Harrison Bergeron's actions reveal about his feelings towards government control?

Learning Goal: Students will read "The Last Human Light" and practice analyzing characteristics and structural elements of informational text, including:

the controlling idea or thesis with supporting evidence
organizational patterns that support multiple topics, categories, and subcategories

as well as the authors use of print and graphic features to achieve specific purpose

ECR Prompt: Explain the benefits of relying on alternative power sources.

Learning Goal: Students will read and excerpt from, "Hidden Figures" and practice explaining the authors message and purpose within a text as well as practice paraphrasing and summarizing in ways that maintain meaning and logical order.

8th Grade Unit Text

Students will read "Blind" and practice analyzing important story elements such as:

plot
characters
setting

while also analyzing how themes are developed through interaction between characters and events.

SCR Prompt: How does Emma’s reaction to Dr. Sassoman’s suggestion of throwing eggs influence the resolution of the conflict?

Students will read "Vanishing Island" and practice analyzing characteristics and structural elements of informational text, including:

the controlling idea or thesis with supporting evidence
multiple organizational patterns within a text to develop the thesis

as well as the authors use of print and graphic features to achieve specific purpose

ECR Prompt: Explain why the people of the “vanishing island” chose to stay.

Students will read and excerpt from, "“Address to the Nation on the Explosion of the Space Shuttle Challenger” " and practice explaining the authors message and purpose within a text, as well as practice paraphrasing and summarizing in ways that maintain meaning and logical order.
