Selection

Mont Pleasant Middle School National Junior Honor Society

Selection Procedure Description

The National Junior Honor Society chapter of Mont Pleasant Middle School is a duly chartered and affiliated chapter of this prestigious national organization. Membership is open to those students who meet the required standards in five areas of evaluation: scholarship, service, leadership, character, and citizenship. Students are selected for membership by majority vote of a five-member principal-appointed faculty council, which bestows this honor upon qualified students on behalf of the faculty of our school each June.

Students in grade 7 are eligible for membership. For the scholarship criterion, a student must have a cumulative GPA of an 85 or higher on a 100 point scale or a 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale. Each spring those students who meet this criterion are invited to complete a Candidate Form that provides the faculty council with information regarding the candidate’s leadership and service.

Leadership is shown by a student's roles in clubs, athletics, and actions in the classroom. Leaders demonstrate initiative, responsibility, and dependability. Candidates will have the opportunity to report leadership roles on the candidate information form for review by the faculty council. Additionally, a faculty member input will be considered regarding a student’s leadership.

Service is shown by students' volunteer work within the school and the community. Students who show service work well with others, are willing to take on difficult responsibilities, and show courtesy by assisting visitors, teachers, and students. Candidates will have the opportunity to report service completed within the school and the community on the candidate information form. Faculty input will also be reviewed.

Character is demonstrated with students displaying the following six characteristics: trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship. To evaluate a candidate’s character, the faculty council uses two forms of input. First, school disciplinary records are reviewed. Second, members of the faculty are solicited for input regarding their professional reflections on a candidate’s service activities, character, and leadership.

Citizenship is shown through students understanding the importance of civic engagement. Students demonstrating citizenship are respectful of other people and their property, follow school rules, and give back to the school community. Student’s citizenship will be demonstrated by student reported experiences on their candidate information form and faculty member evaluations of Mont Pleasant Middle School.

Any solicited faculty input and all Candidate Forms are carefully reviewed by the faculty council to determine membership. A majority vote of the council is necessary for selection. Candidates are notified regarding selection or nonselection according to a predetermined schedule.

Following notification, a formal induction ceremony is held at the school to recognize all the newly selected members. Once inducted, new members are required to maintain the same level of performance (or better) in all four criteria that led to their selection.
