Red Ribbon Week: Oct. 23-31

Be Kind to Your Mind. Live Drug Free.

What is Red Ribbon Week?

Enrique (Kiki) Camarena joined the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) because he wanted to make a difference. In 1985,  at 37 years old, he was murdered while leaving his office for lunch. In honor of Kiki's memory - and his commitment to furthering drug-free communities - people around the country began to wear red ribbons.

The Red Ribbon Campaign is now the country's largest and longest-running drug awareness and prevention campaign. The campaign is sponsored by the National Family Partnership, whose mission since its founding in 1980 has been to support families and communities in raising drug-free youth.

Every year, PUSD's Student & Family Support Services, Tobacco Use Prevention Education (TUPE) Program, and the Pomona Police Department co-sponsor an anti-drug poster contest for PUSD 1st-6th graders. Prizes are awarded to the district-wide Grand Prize Winner, as well as the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners of each grade level.
