Biotechnology is a hands on science course that explores how our society is engineering tools to help us combat diseases, grow food and develop solutions to biological problems. The course includes a study of careers in biotechnology, learning important techniques (like PCR, gel electrophoresis, etc), bioethical principles, and other topics such as: cancer, genetic engineering, GMO's, infectious diseases, world hunger, drug development, stem cells, animal research, forensics and wildlife conservation. This course also includes field trips and support with events in HOSA.
Prerequisites: It is strongly recommended that students take biology first. (If students have not already taken biology, they must have very strong study skills.)
Students that are interested in a career in the medical field are strongly encouraged to take this course.
