The philosophy of the Inglemoor Wrestling program revolves primarily around the idea that each and every student-athlete deserves the support and structure to reach their highest potential, both on the mat and off the mat. In order to reach this potential, student-athletes should be provided supports to assist them in setting achievable goals, while supporting the student-athlete through the process of meeting those goals. Student-Athletes should also be encouraged toward personal improvement, community betterment, and leadership in their everyday lives.
Student-Athletes should be supported in setting, measuring, and meeting goals to improve their abilities and their chances of success. This process should begin early, and progress toward goals should be assessed often. Helping students to generate Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound goals is one of the primary responsibilities of a coach at the secondary level. Student-athletes should be encouraged, through thoughtful and responsive coaching, to set SMART goals that are based on athletic and non-athletic goals in order to work toward achieving greater success in all facets of life; “on the mat, and off the mat.”
Student-Athletes should be pushed, in a healthy and positive manner, to continually reach higher in order to improve themselves. From a wrestling standpoint, this means that we will continuously work to improve technique and be a dedicated student of the sport. It is important that each athlete learns to analyze technique and strategy. This could also be tied to the athlete’s life outside of wrestling. Student-athletes are students first, athletes second, and should be leaders in both, helping wrestlers to be the best student they could be is paramount to the work as teacher coaches. Surrounding this is encouragement for all student-athletes, “on the mat, and off the mat.”
Each student-athlete should be a leader and should be willing to work to improve their station, as well as being stewards of the community. Student-athletes should be encouraged to participate in the school community and should be encouraged to improve the world around them. Whether through civic engagement or by being exemplars, athletes should leave every room they enter a better place. We will work to support fellow students in sports, the arts, music and band, and academia.
Athletes in this program should recognize that every aspect in my program boils down in some way to our motto “On the mat, Off the mat.” This is the north star that guides decisions made, the practices planned, and the hopeful impact that this program imparts on the lives of athletes who join the team.
“On the mat, Off the mat” means:
· Discipline
· Coaches will work to create a program which helps students learn self-discipline, and learn what it means to work harder, and work smarter in order to reach their goals.
· Athletes will work to develop their own self-discipline, making sure that they are prioritizing what needs to get done in order to remain successful
· Growth
· Coaches will work to create a program that helps student-athletes grow, not just in their athletic abilities, but also in their personal and academic lives.
· Athletes will work with the mindset that they can always improve. Athletes will be devoted to their teammates’ growth as well as their own.
· Leadership
· Coaches will practice being positive role models; we will work to demonstrate positive sportsmanship, growth mindset, and a community oriented way of thinking.
· Athletes will work to be a positive influence on the lives of those around them. This means going beyond what is expected in order to make life better for everyone around them.
