See here for an explanation of how School District 71 handles SOGI (Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity discussions in the classroom. Note that SOGI is an inclusive term that represents all individuals regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity.
SOGI is not curriculum. There is no “SOGI curriculum.” However, throughout K-12 curriculum and school activities, students and teachers explore the topic of human rights and:
What it means to value diversity and respect differences.
How to respond to discrimination.
Teachers may include discussions around the B.C. Human Rights Code, sexual orientation and gender identity. Most school districts in B.C. are part of a network for educators who are interested in SOGI-inclusive education – the B.C. SOGI Educator Network. It’s important for schools to be inclusive and safe spaces for students of all sexual orientations and gender identities. Being SOGI-inclusive means:
Speaking about SOGI in a way that makes every student feel like they belong.
Not limiting a person’s potential based on their biological sex and how they understand or express their gender.
Welcoming everyone without discrimination, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity.
When a child is having a problem with a peer(s), it can be hard for parents or other students to know exactly what is happening. Is it bullying or are students just being unkind? Knowing the difference will determine how to deal with it.
Each type of behaviour must be handled differently to keep children safe and to help them learn what is the proper behaviour. We created this helpful infographic to show how schools and staff respond to conflict that arises between students.
Building safe school environments where students are respected is a top priority for Comox Valley Schools. We encourage students and parents to take action against bullying behaviour. If bullying behaviour is witnessed or experienced, talk to someone – a counsellor or trained professional. Tell someone. Notify your school or report it anonymously through the ERASE tool.
