ENGWR 300

College Composition

Welcome!

I'm [Name] and I will be your instructor for ENGWR 300 College Composition. I am so excited to be your professor this semester, and I can't wait to get to know you and support you every way I can. This is a picture of me and our SCC mascot, Hughie the Panther. (TBH that costume could really use a glow up!)

Please explore this site to get a sense of our class and how we will work together this semester. When you're ready, you can click on the link at the bottom of the page to sign into Canvas, which is where you will access course materials, turn in assignments, and communicate with me and your classmates.

I look forward to seeing you online!

(You are welcome to call me {Name]. If you prefer, you can call me Professor Name.)

My Teaching Philosophy

I love teaching. Becoming a teacher was the best decision I've ever made. As a writing instructor, I am most excited about learning with you, learning from you, and working alongside you to increase the power of your unique voice.

It might sound weird coming from a writing instructor, but to me, writing well is really hard! The challenge is what I love about it, and there is no better feeling than finally figuring out the most powerful way to say what you want to say. My job is to help you experience that feeling in our class and in all of your college classes.

My favorite event of the academic year is graduation. I can't wait to jump out of the procession to snap a selfie with YOU in a few years! (P.S. Why do I always make the same cheesy selfie face? Do any of you have that issue??)

How ENGWR 300 Works

  • This course is a 16-week, fully online course that begins on January 15 and ends on May 18.

  • This course is asynchronous, which means it does not have any required meeting times (on Zoom or otherwise).

  • There is no required textbook. All of your required readings will be included in our course modules in Canvas.

  • You will learn in a community with your peers. This is not a self-paced course. In a self-paced course, you'd be able to turn in the assignments whenever you wanted. In an asynchronous course, you can certainly choose when you work on assignments, but there are weekly due dates to ensure that the class is working on the same things at the same time. That's the only way you can have fruitful discussions and give each other feedback on your work.

  • By Tuesday of Week 1, you will be expected to log in to our course in Canvas and complete the Student Information Survey to signal your intent to complete this class.

  • This class is organized into one-week modules that open each Sunday morning.

  • Each module contains reading, writing, and discussion assignments. Assignments will be due each week on Tuesdays and Saturdays.

Ready to Get Started? Here's what to do right away:

  1. First, be sure to click through the tabs at the top of this page to read about grading and learn about support resources. If you are on a computer, you should see the different pages listed across the top of this site. If you're on a mobile device, you'll need to click the three-bar drop down menu on the top left.

  2. Once you've read through all the pages on this site, go to the Los Rios Single Sign-On Page and sign in with your student ID and password, then click on Canvas. (You can also sign into Canvas by clicking on the Canvas icon on SCC's homepage, or selecting the drop-down menu under Student Login at the top of SCC's homepage.)

  3. Once in Canvas, click on the square that says ENGWR 300.

  4. Once you click on ENGWR 300, you'll see the homepage for our course. Click on the button that says "Start here!" or click on "modules" in the list on the left of your screen. Begin by reading the information in the Orientation module, and then complete the Student Info Survey no later than Tuesday, January 18. There will be other tasks as well, but you must at least complete the survey by Tuesday, 1/18 in order to stay enrolled in the course.

Important Information about COVID-19 Vaccination Requirement

All Los Rios students and employees must have a vaccination clearance (proof of vaccination or an approved exemption) on file in order to access all campus facilities. This includes classrooms and all on-campus student support services. While this requirement does not affect your participation in our class, which is a fully online course, if you plan to access services on campus, you must have a vaccination clearance on file.
