"My work consists of abstract paintings, nature paintings, and digital illustrations. I've been drawing since childhood, but I've never done it professionally. It's more of a hobby of mine and it's something I do on inspiration, so I don't think it's appropriate or inappropriate. Each of my drawings has a different style, so it's hard to say where they fit in more, as I try something new every time. I hope my work is to someone's liking."

My artwork echoes the life experiences I have been through in its emotional state. The origin of inspiration for my pieces includes my fellow artists and the earth's natural hues. I intend to sway my audience to feel how I do inside.

"My passion for art started at a young age and I am currently working with traditional mediums including graphite as well as digital mediums."

" As a young adult entering the art world, I hope to create a new, unique, voice that challenges modern ways of thinking, by creating out-of-the-box artwork. My inspiration most often comes from pop culture, and mass media which includes but is not limited to; music videos, movies, video games, fashion magazines, and advertisements. My end goal is to find ways in my art that correctly express my emotions, thoughts, and aesthetic style, even if it may be avant-garde and not directly comprehensible.
In “My Culture” I use a variety of media to demonstrate the chaotic, messy, and materialistic nature of what everyday topics consume my life. Growing up as biracial in the United States, the topic of my culture or my cultural background is extremely blurry and undefined. I live in a world with ties to three countries so the food, fashion, beauty trends, and styles that consume one's culture don’t mix. As a result, in recent years I have let my interests define me. Objects like shoes, outfits, hairstyles, and nail color all define “My Culture”. This is what this mixed media piece means to me; my self-created lifestyle. I hope that when audiences react to my piece they will first be confused, initially wondering why culture is associated with Adidas Sambas and green hair. But after paying attention they might start to realize, ‘Hey I love some of these things too!’ and how these objects associate with who they are and how they want to be perceived, which in turn reflects their lifestyle and culture. As it does to me. "

"I am a retired civil engineer and have returned to college to become an artist, as I was meant to be as a young person. This picture is a self-portrait of me coming into who is unfolding, metamorphizing, and becoming, an artist. Changes, the self-actualization process. Thank you to my fellow artist friend Tracey Benedict at www.whotookthatpic.com for the photo."

"I have worked as a journalist for three decades but recently decided to switch from writing to photography and focus my attention on wildlife and the loss of habitat. My work focuses on birds in the Sacramento Valley, which is known for bird diversity due to being on a busy migration route and having major rivers. I am attempting to expand the limits of traditional bird photography while also using landscape photography to illustrate both the beauty and destruction of our bird habitat."

"This is a mixed media piece; I was inspired by old-style Victorian bedrooms. I used tissue, magazine cutouts, colored paper, fabric, wire, a broken fan, and oil pastels. I stuck to muted and dark tones to better accentuate the details on the furniture. "
"In this modern era, taking photos is quite simple. As normal as everyone, I was taking pictures that contains no meaning whatsoever. However, there was always something missing in my work. While I try to learn what I am missing, I found that there is a connection between nature and emotions. Each subject in nature interprets as an emotion. With this in mind, I searched for emotions in nature and try to capture them. In my work for this competition, I am trying to show loneliness in nature with simple compositions. Thank you so much for the opportunity to present my work."

"My artwork currently consists of landscape-inspired abstract acrylic paintings. My background in art, landscape architecture, and ecology highly influences my art and state of mind. My artwork attempts to depict my thoughts about the patterns of nature and convey the feelings experienced from being in nature. The flows and patterns of the shapes also display how my mind can be hectic and winding. The natural environment provides an excellent space for reflection and meditation just like creating art."

"For me, art is freedom – from responsibility, grief, and my mind. What’s ironic is these things are exactly what has pushed my art to its best. When my mind is occupied and racing, creation is both my dampener and my outlet. While music flows into my ears, my mind falls into almost a meditative state in which my hands work before me as if on autopilot."

"Since childhood, I have been drawn to nature, the creative and imaginative. From forest hideaways in the Oregon countryside to focusing on earning girl scout badges, to creating fiber art, I was always making. Recently finishing a one-year Encore Fellowship sponsored by Intel Corporation. I now have more time to create and explore. "

"The mini masterpiece landscape series. It is comprised of 10 small paintings all done live and often right before sunset. I visited Oahu for a month in an attempt to connect with myself so that I could ground and free my soul simultaneously. Therefore my paintings are meant to bring a sense of grounding and freedom. Another goal in painting these pieces was to tether the artist in me to Hawaii during my time there. I think I accomplished my goals.
The second is my piece of an encaustic painting from a photo taken also in Hawaii."
