I I believe that the best decisions for schools should be made by the people who know them best—superintendents, school leaders, and communities working together. That’s why I strongly advocate for local control and autonomy, ensuring that districts have the flexibility to make choices that fit their unique needs.
Recently, I testified at the Minnesota Senate to oppose a statewide cell phone ban in schools. While managing technology use in classrooms is critical, a one-size-fits-all mandate ignores the diverse realities of schools across the state. I believe in trusting superintendents to collaborate with their educators, families, and students to create policies that work best for them.
This commitment to local decision-making isn’t just about cell phones—it’s about standing up for the right of school districts to govern themselves, ensuring that state policies support, rather than restrict, our ability to serve students effectively.
The Minnesota Thought Leaders 2024 Summit, held at Tech High School in St. Cloud, exemplifies my belief in the strength of connection. This event brought together business executives, educators, and policymakers to collaboratively address the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in Minnesota schools. Guiding the morning panels and participating in breakout sessions, we emphasized the importance of proactive collaboration to harness AI's potential in education. Witnessing the eagerness of diverse groups to unite and develop a cohesive framework reinforced my commitment to fostering partnerships that drive meaningful change for our students.

In response to heightened concerns about immigration enforcement, I reaffirmed our district's commitment to providing a safe and inclusive environment for all students, regardless of their immigration status. This stance reflects my dedication to leading with both care and courage, ensuring that every child feels secure and valued within our schools. By proactively addressing these concerns, standing firm in our support for all families, and rooting our stance in established policy, we demonstrate the strength that comes from clear, compassionate and courageous leadership.
