Getting better by my own hard work!
GROW: The AVID acronym GROW stands for Get ready to learn, Review what you know, Open your mind to new ideas, and Wonder and ask. It can be used as a learning tool to bring students' awareness to and focus on the behaviors and mindsets that will accelerate their success in school and beyond.
Hang the attached poster up in your classroom for a daily reminder of these important steps to inspire students to reach their full potential!
SLANT to GROW Change: AVID is committed to helping students develop the classroom skills, behaviors, and mindsets that support them in becoming the innovators and leaders of tomorrow. To further this goal, AVID developed a replacement (GROW) for the acronym SLANT which has previously appeared in many areas of the AVID curriculum and professional learning.
Note-taking Article: Here is an article explaining the importance of not only taking notes, but also how to connect them to student's learning! There are several examples and templates that you can utilize and change to fit your grade level needs. There are even some tips on how to do notes online!
Interactive Notebook: The Interactive Notebook is a note taking strategy that can work well in the lower grades. Students can draw pictures to represent vocabulary words, science topics, number sense, and onset sounds!
Levels of Questioning:
Level 1 questions can be answered by looking in the text, there is no need to think past the text that has been read. Level 1 are simple questions with answers in the text.
Level 2 questions require you to use the text and your schema/past knowledge to come up with an answer. These questions require a bit more thinking. There may be multiple answers to level 2 questions.
Level 3 questions require you to combine information from the text, schema and also your individual perspectives/feelings to form an answer. You find ways to use the information that you have gained. There may be
multiple answers to a level 3 question.

#1) K-W-L Chart
Fill out the first two columns prior to introducing a new concept. Students will reflect on what they already know and what they want to learn. After the lesson, the last column will be filled in reflecting on what they have learned. This can be done as a whole group or students can fill out individual charts.
#2) AVID reflective journal
Similar to the KWL chart, but also has further reflective opportunity. Could be used for more independent reflection in older grade levels.
AVID Weekly provides educators with robust lesson plans for teaching students how to access and understand rigorous texts—across disciplines. Lessons are written for teachers by teachers and are aligned with AVID's critical reading process. Teachers have access to more AVID Weekly lessons on myavid.org .

Goal-Setting: Goal setting is a learned activity that benefits students as they plan for success in school and beyond. It helps students visualize where they want to go and prioritize what actions will lead them there.
Types of Goals:
Individual
Group
Short-term
Long-term
Academic
Personal
Teacher Tips:
Model goal-setting
Discuss and brainstorm appropriate goals with the class
Caution students against setting goals that are out of reach. Stress that “small steps” are better.
Instructional Steps:
Distribute setting SMART goals to each student, and then define the types of goals they will be creating.
As a class, read through each of the “SMART” descriptors and answer any questions students may have.
Give time for students to write down or brainstorm one to three goals.
Afterwards, have students hare their goals with an accountability partner and save their goals.
Allow students to revise their action steps as needed.
