Literacy Framework

• 90 minutes of Literacy

• Whole group, direct instruction around identified Literacy Power Standards, using district-approved literacy curriculum (tier 1)  10-15 minute mini-lesson

• Small group instruction: Flexible groups formed using student data (Tier 1 and 2) 15-20 minutes groups

  • PRESS Interventions for students who require intervention

  • Enrichment for students who are meeting or exceeding

  • Guided Reading Groups

    • Groups should include the five Pillars of Literacy

      • Phonemic Awareness

      • Phonics

      • Vocabulary Development

      • Fluency

      • Comprehension

  • 2-3 groups a day

  • Include all aspects of the literacy lesson plan

• Individual Conferencing

  • Develop a conferring calendar based on reading proficiency 

  • Emergency= 2 years below grade level; At risk= 1 year below grade level; On grade level

• Independent reading time with accompanying independent work for a developmentally appropriate amount of time (at least 15 minutes for Kindergarten and 20-30 minutes for grades 1-5, with increasing stamina)

  • Options to set up centers or implement task boards

• Closing: 3-5 minutes of a closure to literacy

  • Examples: Fist to five, partner share out, exit slip

• Writing Instruction-separate from the 90 minutes of literacy
