Students must choose either band or orchestra.
No. Band and orchestra are elective courses. We would encourage any interested student to join NOW in order to continue on in middle and high school. Band/orchestra students benefit from many special travel and performance opportunities!
Students are “pulled out” of their regular class for one 30-minute small group lesson each week.
Students are expected to practice 4-5 times a week for 20 minutes or more. A commitment to routine practice is critical in learning any new skill, and this is also true in learning to play an instrument.
Students generally provide their own instruments and music stands; and lesson books are provided by the school district. Several local music stores offer instrument rent-to-purchase or rental programs. Monthly rental can range between $35 and $80 each month.
Please contact your child's teacher so they may check to see that it is in good playing condition.
The district owns a limited number of instruments. Students qualifying for free/reduced lunch are eligible to request to use a school instrument at no cost (no violins or saxophones are available). Instruments are distributed on a first-come, first-served basis.
In the days following the registration, the student will meet with their band/orchestra teacher at school to determine which instrument is most appropriate. Students will actually try out various instruments during the interview to help in making this important decision. Several factors must be considered in the instrument selection process, including personal interest, how well the student is suited to a particular instrument, and the need for balanced instrumentation.
