5th grade students researched this question by building background knowledge and studying primary source documents.
Background Knowledge
Students read a complex text about electricity -- learning what it is, how it works, and how Edison supported its development.
Document Analysis
Students read a comprehensive background essay and deeply analyzed 3 primary source documents to build their arguments. We paid close attention to Edison's quote: "I have not failed. I just found 10,000 ways that won't work" -- discussing what he meant by this quote and his thoughts about failure as an inventor.
Final Products
Students wrote complete paragraphs analyzing two of Edison's inventions. We followed a Claim, Evidence, Reasoning approach to our writing, and focused on learning how to put our ideas down on paper. Then, they got creative! 5th graders were able to choose a creative outlet to share their knowledge.
