September thru end of Trimester 1
Students were asked to think critically about our number system -- the Hindu-Arabic number system -- to answer the question of why and how it works so well.
Students read and analyzed an article called "Counting like a Greek" to learn about other numbers systems, such as the Greek number system. We discussed why this might have worked for them, but also why we no longer use it.
Students read a comprehensive background essay to gather information about our number system. Then, we analyzed 3 primary source documents to support our arguments.
Students are writing a 5 paragraph argumentative essay to explain their thinking.
