3rd Grade Creature Project

Thank you, Thomas Lake Parent Committee, for your grant donation to our Creature Project models! Each spring we have our students imagine a “brand new, never before seen creature” to write about in our Informational/Creative Writing Unit. They are asked to name and create a habitat for their creature, name its predators and prey, imagine the offspring and so much more. Towards the end of the unit students are given the opportunity to make a model of their creature. In the past we have only been able to offer this as an optional at-home project, with less than 50 % of our students making a model of their creature. Some have made models out of clay, others have sewn a stuffed animal, their models are endlessly creative. This year we wanted to give our learners an opportunity to present these creatures to an audience. We were lucky enough to have Mr. Tews agree to help students create a habitat in art class and second grade agreed to come for a day of presentations. Our third graders couldn’t have been more proud.

Without your generous donation, we would not have been able to create their models or present to second grade. Having the opportunity to mold and shape animals from their imagination into a “real” creature was so empowering for our third graders. We cannot thank you enough for providing us with the clay and art supplies to make this happen for EVERY third grader. Please see our photos to see the huge smiles and pride on our third graders faces.

Thank you again,

The Third Grade Team
