In this course, students will be using the engineering design process to design, test and build a game.
We will start by considering the problem for the trimester: Design a game that is fun and engaging for a specific group of people.
Students have the option of making a game for themselves/ classmates, a younger group of students or adults in their lives. We also will spend some time thinking about what makes a game fun.
To help come up with ideas for a game, students will observe and explore a variety of games including:
board games
card games
wooden games
plastic games
card + parts games
dice games
Students will document their idea for a game by making a plan. Their plan will include a sketch with labels to show approximate size, shape and components. Students should also be able to answer questions such as:
Who is the game for?
How many people can/should play the game?
How do you win?
What parts does your game have?
What are the parts made of?
Once a plan has been submitted, students will have access to tools and equipment to start their game creation.
Safety is my number one priority. Students will watch a safety video before using certain equipment. Following safety procedures during construction is required by all students. Acting in a way that can cause potential harm or injury to themselves or others will result in the loss of access to those tools. Alternative materials will be provided as needed.
Students will have other members of class play the first draft of the game they have created. Feedback will be given to students including what is working well and what could be improved.
Based on feedback from their peers, students will decide what improvements to make for their game. This might mean small changes like size, shape, number of pieces or difficulty of game.
Students will use feedback from peers to make a final draft of their game.
Play your game with family once you have made any final changes to your game. Make observations of while playing to help you answer the following questions:
How did your design improve or fix the problem?
What problems does your design still have?
What would you try to improve if you had more time?
