Science in the fifth grade is tested in the spring by the state. It is centered around three major units; Earth Science, Physical Science, and Life Science.
Earth science focuses on the characteristics, cycles and patterns in the solar system and within the universe.
Physical science focuses on the forces that affect motion. This includes the relationship between the change in speed of an object, the amount of force applied and the mass* of the object. Light and sound are explored as forms of energy that move in predictable ways, depending on the matter through which they move.
Life science focuses on foundational knowledge of the structures and functions of ecosystems.
Grades will be taken each quarter in a combination of in class assignments, homework, projects, quizzes, and tests. The focus of the course grade will be on assessments where students really show what they are capable of.
Students will be successful in this course by participating in classroom discussions, taking notes during class guided by the lesson, reviewing materials during study time and at home, and preparing for quizzes and tests by studying.
