Candidate Forms are sent to eligible seventh and eighth grade students during term 4 to start the Candidate Process. Scholastic eligibility is reserved for those students with a cumulative average of a B (84%) or higher in each course in terms 1-3.
Candidates must complete all portions of the candidate form and return to the National Junior Honor Society advisor by the date indicated on the form.
Candidate forms are divided into the following sections:
In addition, candidates must submit a letter of recommendation and an essay. Once candidate forms are reviewed by the NJHS faculty council, candidates may be asked to an interview as the final step in the Candidate Process. Candidates should practice for their interview using the sample interview questions so that they are prepared for their interview. Appropriate attire is requested to reflect the formality of the occasion.
Five members of the AMHS staff will vote upon acceptance of the candidate. The NJHS Advisor is not a voting member of this faculty council.
The Candidate Process is not complete until Induction Ceremony the following autumn. Candidates may be rejected without due process for violations of scholarship, discipline, or showing poor character or leadership qualities up until the candidate becomes a member by taking the NJHS oath.
Once the NJHS faculty council votes upon acceptance of a candidate, s/he will be given the NJHS Handbook, which includes bylaws and obligations of membership. The Handbook must be read and signed before the candidate's induction into the National Junior Honor Society.
