1. Sailing
a. organise a weekly Learn to Sail programme over the summer school terms for the primary aged children and for the youth and other community members.
b. organise training by Waterwise Inc. and Yachting NZ.
c. choose a Sailor of the Year to go on a course at the Wakatere Boating Club in Devonport.
2. Kayaking
a. run weekly lessons over the summer school terms for the primary school aged children and for the youth and other community members.
3. Swimming
a. help organise weekly swimming lessons for the children of Mulberry Grove School.
b. help organise the annual Inter-School Swimming Sports day.
c. organise a Swimming NZ instructor to visit the island to give their Water Skills for Life programme.
4. Beach Safety Skills
a. organise visits from Drowning Prevention Auckland.
b. Every 2 years, organise a visit from NZ Surf Life saving for their Beach Safety programme.
5. Boat Safety Skills
a. organise trips where possible with Coastguard.
b. organise visits from Waterwise and Yachting NZ.
6. Marine and Maritime Education
a. during the winter months the children of all 3 schools (Mulberry Grove, Kaitoke and Te Kura o Okiwi) learn about marine and maritime subjects via our 7 Seas programme.
7. Sailing Regatta Event
a. In March 2021 the inaugural Aotea Sailing Regatta took place (replaces the SeaFest event). Children, youth, young people and adults can apply their sailing and safety knowledge in a fun way for some contextual learning.
During these programmes there is also a focus on the emotional and physical wellbeing of our tamariki, adult and youth volunteers by using our water-based activities to build G.R.I.T!
