BRHS has decided to use portfolios because it provides a progression of learning:
Authenticity
- Reviewers see examples of your work and performance rather than a single grade or number.
- Show progress over time in one location.
Student ownership
- Reflections - think and write about your work, noting strengths and areas that need improvement.
- Presentation -
- Take pride in what you have accomplished and become aware of your interests and strengths.
- Celebrate your accomplishments with your teachers, peers, family, and community.
Flexibility
- Collections of work can be used for
- Showing growth over time
- Providing evidence of progress toward meeting standards
- Exhibiting best work
- Evidence can come from any course or from activities outside of school.
- Personalization
- The portfolio tells your individual story of learning which is unlike anyone else's learning.
Promoting a Culture of Sharing and Reflection
- Teachers get to know you better as individuals which could lead to more differentiation in curriculum and instruction.
- Portfolio review and reflection can lead to a greater awareness of gaps in school curriculum and course offerings.
