About the Team

The Student Innovation Team, a.k.a. S.I.T. is a group of students from grades 3 through 5 that are interested in learning about technology and other STEM related fields. Currently the team meets during the school day, one day per week during their recess time.

The team was created in 2016 by Paula Vigue (the WES Computer Specials Teacher) with the first meeting held in January of 2017. It was started to allow for students that have an interest in technology to meet, try out and learn new things, discuss them with peers, and eventually present them to the community (class, school, and the public). It builds additional skills such as communication, collaboration, logic and problem-solving, writing, and leadership.

Unfortunately, not everyone that applies for a position will get one. Just like a real job, there are so many positions to fill. Last year 27 were filled, more than what was actually available. This year I allowed for 32 and broke it up into three days. Another similarity to a real job is that there is a probationary period. In this case it is three weeks (meetings). A student may ask to leave or I may ask them to leave. There were still others that didn't make it this year. Don't give up! Try again next year! Just remember that we are looking for students that demonstrate positive leadership skills consistently. Keeping a reflective journal of your experiences is also required.
