The Student Success Team has developed a comprehensive Brightspace Site with the resources needed for your success as a Faculty Advisor. All faculty should visit the site and follow the advising system created for the division.
Faculty advising is designed to support students academically, professionally, and personally throughout their counseling training. Each student is provided a first semester experience advisor specifically for their first term to acclimate them to the program. Following the first semester, the student is assigned a faculty advisor who serves as a consistent point of contact for course planning, licensure preparation, practicum/internship readiness, and career development throughout the program. Advisors also help students navigate professional identity formation, ethical challenges, and opportunities for growth both in and outside the classroom. Meeting with an advisor at least once per semester is encouraged to stay on track with graduation requirements and licensure timelines.
Advising is a collaborative process, and students are encouraged to come prepared with questions, updates on their progress, and reflections on their career goals. Students should meet with their advisor for the following:
selection of courses/program plan of study if altering the sequence of courses outlined earlier
academic progress review & changes
career advising and general mentoring
personal and academic student support
programmatic, community concerns, and other individual concerns.
The student’s faculty advisor collaborates with various stakeholders to ensure student success. This may include the Student Support Team, Title IX, Disability Support Services, Clinical Director, Divisional Administrative Director, etc. Further, the advisor makes recommendations for student remediation, program dismissal, and assists with mediation of student/student or student/faculty conflicts.
