How do I ask questions about Commencement events and my participation?
Who can "walk" in the Commencement Ceremony?
Students who will complete their degree in the 2024-2025 academic year are eligible to "walk" in the 2025 commencement ceremony. This includes students who graduate(d) in Summer 2024, Fall 2024, Winter 2025, Spring 2025, Summer/Fall 2024, Winter/Spring 2025, Fall/Winter 2024, Spring/Summer 2025.
Students who are on track to graduate at the end of Summer Quarter 2025, and who meet specific requirements, may be able to participate early in the 2025 Commencement Ceremony. Students who wish to participate in advance of their degree completion must submit a “Petition to Participate in Commencement Ceremonies Early” (PPCCE) form through the Office of Integrated Student Services (OISS).
Can a graduate attend the ceremony remotely?
There will be no opportunity for graduates to commence remotely. Graduates who do not attend a ceremony will not have their names read during the event. All eligible graduate names will be listed in the program and all graduates may submit a photo to be included in the pre- and post-ceremony slide show before and after the livestreams. All ceremonies will be livestreamed and available later on-demand.
Why should I attend Commencement?
Graduating students attend Commencement for many personal reasons. Some want to participate in the formal conclusion of their academic studies with fellow students and faculty. Others want to share the recognition and celebration of their academic achievement with family and friends. Many students look forward to wearing the regalia (cap and gown) that signify their degree. And a photograph of a graduate in their regalia can become a treasured memory or professional tool. Whatever the reason, Antioch graduates who attend the Commencement Ceremony recall the event as a meaningful and enjoyable culmination of their Antioch experience.
Why are there three MAP Sessions for Commencement? Which should I attend?
Because we have limited space in the Antioch courtyard, we have split Commencement into three ceremonies to accommodate all graduates and their guests. The largest group of graduates eligible to walk in Commencement comes from the MAP program so MAP graduates will be walking in all three ceremonies. MAP Low Residency grads are encouraged to participate in the 10:00 AM (PDT) ceremony. MAP grads are encouraged to coordinate with peers who are walking if they wish to attend the same ceremony.
How much does participation in Commencement cost?
The only cost associated with Commencement Exercises at AULA is regalia.
Total cost of regalia, shipped, is about $50 for undergraduate degrees, and about $75 for graduate degrees. Additional accessories, like fancy tassels and stoles to represent nations, affiliations, and identities, can also be added to the regalia purchase, at additional cost.
Other optional costs - Professional photographers will be on hand for Commencement, and those professional photos, as well as various framings and accessories, will be available for purchase from the photographer for a fee.
Who can attend my Commencement Ceremony?
Graduates may invite up to five guests of their choosing to attend Commencement. Anyone and everyone with an internet connection may also livestream the event from anywhere in the world.
Is attending Commencement important for my future profession?
This is a matter of opinion, but attending commencement is usually not required for any professional purpose. Generally speaking, the paper diploma (which is sent in the mail after official graduation and degree conferral), and/or an official transcript (which is available upon request) are most important for professional purposes.
Does the name read at commencement have to be my legal name?
No. All graduates will be given the opportunity to use the name of their choosing (within reason) to be read during commencement exercises. For the ceremony program, which will list all eligible graduates, registered names will be used.
If I want to change my registered name, how do I do that?
Students wishing to change their official registered name with the university may do so by contacting the Registrar’s Office. The email account for the Registrar's Office at Antioch University is registrar@antioch.edu.
I’m differently abled. Is there anything I need to keep in mind?
The Commencement Ceremony will take place in the courtyard outside of the Antioch buildings and is accessible from the parking lot. Graduates will have the opportunity to cross a stage that has 2-4 steps up and down. Can I decorate my mortarboard?
I’m worried about the heat during an outdoor event in June. Is there a shaded area or cooling room for those who need it?
The AULA courtyard in well-landscaped, with mature trees and shaded areas. There are also designated cooling rooms surrounding the courtyard that can be used by for those who need to sit out of the heat.
Is there daycare at Commencement?
No, the AULA campus is not licensed to house day care services.
Can I bring my pet to Commencement?
While pets are allowed in the courtyard, they are not allowed indoors. Considering the number of people in attendance, pets are encouraged to stay at home. Service animals are allowed.
What is Antioch's Covid protocol for Commencement?
Antioch currently does not have a mask or vaccine requirement for on-campus events. Therefore, participants and attendees at the commencement ceremony are not required to be masked. To safeguard one’s own health and that of others, face masks are highly recommended indoors but are not required at this time.
