Gifted & Talented Foundational Training (30-hours) & Yearly Update Training (6-hours)
According to the Texas State Plan for the Gifted, all principals, counselors, and core content teachers with gifted students in their classrooms are required by the state (as described in the State Plan for the Education of Gifted Talented Students 5.8 & 5.9) to attend a one-time 30-hour foundational training and complete a 6-hour update each school year. Our goal is to provide you a streamline that will take less time and be respectful of your time outside of contract hours. Please review the timely and pertinent information and next steps below.
📌 Who Is Required to Attend GT Training?
Teachers:
Initial 30-Hour GT one-time Foundational Training is required for:
Elementary (K–5): All core content teachers (ELAR, Math, Science, Social Studies) who are new to the profession or who have not yet completed the full 30 hours.
Secondary (6–12): All core content teachers (ELAR, Math, Science, Social Studies) teaching Honors, Pre-AP, or AP courses who are new or still need to complete the 30 hours.
Note: Teachers attending Advanced Placement Summer Institute (APSI) or Institute for Teaching Excellence (ITE) this summer will receive 18 hours of GT credit. They will still need to complete:
Day 1: Nature & Needs of the Gifted Learner
Day 2: Gifted Identification
A 6-hour GT Update for 2026–2027
Recommended: Complete before receiving GT students in the new school year, DUE May 31, 2026.
6-Hour Annual GT Update is required for:
Elementary (K–5): All core content teachers must complete this yearly.
Secondary (6–12): All core content area teachers teaching Honors/Pre-AP/AP courses must complete this yearly.
