In Jurassic Park, Michael Crichton seems to be against making technological advances without regard for potential consequences.

According to the article, "There is no unauthorized breeding in Jurassic Park," Jurassic Park (both the book and the film) and the movie Gattaca portray cultural anxieties, such as the idealistic, nuclear family from the 1950’s version of the American Dream (Briggs, Kelber-Kaye). This dream could allegedly be tarnished by genetic tampering and could be seen as morally improper or wrong.

This perspective is very interesting, as it points to how cultural values could shift with the advance of genetic technology. Crichton may also be alluding to this idea, as Dr. Alan Grant gradually grows more fond of the children in the book, becoming a sort of protector, alongside Dr. Sattler in a loose picture of what a typical “nuclear” family would look like.

Analysis:
This is the very illusion that John Hammond seems to have fallen victim to. It appears that one of the biggest mistakes with the park is that its creators believed they could control their creations through computer programs, numbers, and genetic sequences. The problem with playing God is that humans make mistakes. Whether one believes in a divine being that created our world or not, that divine being does not make all these miniscule mistakes like we do. Every little mistake in the book – the asexual frog DNA, the faulty security system, the computer system used to keep track of the population – put tiny chinks in the alleged control of the park, until that control splintered and dismantled completely.
