Description
This first chemistry course is for students planning to major in science, engineering, or pre-professional programs such as pre-medicine, pre-dentistry, or pre-pharmacy. Topics include the structure and function of atoms, molecules, and compounds, as well as states of matter, solutions, energy of reactions, stoichiometry, and a short introduction to organic chemistry. The lab introduces hands-on experience with chemical analysis, material properties, and chromatography, as well as using equipment such as analytical balances, volumetric glassware, and an optical absorbance spectrometer.
Prerequisite:
CHEM131:
MPE ≥ P3 OR passing grade in MATH165,166,168,191;
High school chemistry or physics is strongly recommended.
CHEM132:
A Passing grade in CHEM131 of a C- or better.
These two courses are sequential. They cannot be taken out of order.
Required Materials (New for 2024. Different from 2023 and prior)
ALEKS online homework from McGraw-Hill comes with the e-Textbook. (more details)
Calculator (any of the TI-series. Cheapest is the TI-30sx)
Minimum functions: simple arithmetic functions, logarithm (log), natural logarithm (ln), exponential (ex), scientific notation (EE or E or EXP). A graphing calculator or programmable one is not necessary but allowable.
Indirect vent Goggles (not glasses): Search for "indirect vent goggles". A popular name brand is UVEX.
You can buy your own. Amazon has some good prices.
We have some UVEX regular and over-the-glasses (larger size) to sell you on the first lab for about $20.
iClicker App. Download the "student app" as appropriate for your mobile device. FREE!!!
ONLY login with your AU email and password. Do NOT use gmail, yahoo, etc. email accounts.
If you login with a non-AU email...you will have to pay and it will mess up the grade transfer process....so don't do it!
Search for chemistry at Andrews University and you should be able to self-enroll into your class section.
Search for General Chemistry section 1 or section 2.
