Gatekeeping without peer review (2023) It turns out that people don't like being told they have biases. The basic point here is that the same biases inherent in peer review (e.g., status biases) may be even worse at the editorial desk evaluation decision point. Desk rejections are often not well supported with clear scientific or backed up with citations (e.g., "novelty", "well-known already", etc.). Ironically, this op-ed has been desk rejected by three publications - eLife, The Chronicle, and Inside Higher Ed - the latter two provided no feedback, the former provided spurious, personal disagreements and claimed "well known" without providing any evidence for the claim. Apparently editors are not willing to publish anything that might be critical of their decision process. PsyArXiv
