Map-Making Lesson Pace
First, I will introduce myself to the students, introduce classroom expectations and norms, have them introduce themselves to me, and most importantly, each other. Encouraging them to find common ground regarding their previous knowledge about maps (6 minutes).
Then I will display a map and explain the different features of it such as the compass rose, key, scale, landmarks/capitals (4 minutes).
Display a second map and ask students to identify the different parts mentioned before (4 minutes).
Then explaining to students that they will be creating their own maps of the classroom and hiding a surprise which they will need to mark on the map, also allowing time for questions to be asked to clarify and further explain (7 minutes).
Encouraging students to find a partner followed by explaining that one of them will need to close their eyes while the other hides a piece of candy and then they will swap (3 minutes).
As students create their maps, walking around, checking their progress, re-establishing key points of the map like landmarks, compass rose, key, and scale, being available to answer questions if needed (10 minutes).
Allowing the partners to try to go find the piece of candy that their partner hid with the use of their map and swapping (7 minutes).
Remaining time is used for a class reflection, what we learned, what was challenging, what would we do different if we did this activity again, was it difficult/easy to include the landmarks, and the use of scale (5 minutes).
