Culture of Learning
The culture of learning I wish to create in my classroom is a culture of growth, understanding, safety, and curiosity.Â
To create this culture of growth, I'll meet my students where they're at and let them know that it's alright to mess up and in fact, let's find out how that happened and how we can build upon that. To create a culture of understanding, I'll emphasis basic empathy and respect for one another. To create this culture of safety, I'll make sure all my students feel heard, comfortable, and seen by not only me but one another. To emphasize a culture of curiosity, I won't answer questions with "I don't know" or "I'm not sure" but I'll answer with "Let's find out how or why."
Tool to help with my culture of learning:
Talking Piece - When participating in open discussion instead of raising hands, passing around a stuffed animal.
I think a Talking piece would help the most with cultivating my culture of learning because it promotes active listening among peers, ensures equitable participation, and creates a no judgement space for students to share out; all of these are important and coincide with my major goal of wanting to ensure that students feel heard, seen, and comfortable in a classroom space. This is also a great method for younger children as it visually signals that it needs to be quieter in order to listen to other people speak.
