The atrium is not mechanically conditioned, relying totally on natural ventilation. A HEPEX Tubing radiant hydronic heating system is installed in the concrete slab to temper the space in the heating season (if this proves to be necessary). Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) models of the atrium were created to evaluate feasibility and practicality at the moment. No cooling is provided to the atrium in the cooling season. Since the VAV system efficiently and sufficiently satisfies the heating load of the building, the radiant system is not connected to the geothermal system at present, and is not operated. [1]
