Kindergarten at both elementary schools have started their Project Lead the Way unit on Structure and Function. Check out their pipe cleaners designs where they needed to create the tallest free-standing structure with ten pipe cleaners. They also built houses to withstand the wolf's force.

We loved having Glenn Jones with us this morning from NBC 10 Boston. Students were engaged and excited to get tips for the natural disaster broadcasts they will be starting today. Students then started filming. Thank you Bruce and Russ for doing the filming, kids loved being in front of the camera and green screen. Can’t wait to see the final products. Great end to our Project Lead the Way Earth Science module.

Mrs. Elliott’s class had the opportunity to meet with the ST Math game designers from Mind Research. An amazing time learning how they are fixing a “hack” in the game, giving feedback to students on their games, and learning what’s coming up next for ST!

Animal Prosthesis Presentations
4th grade presented their Project Lead the Way animal prosthesis to 3rd graders. Students described how they went through the design process to come up with their final prototypes.

STEM Week Challenge in Action
Our 6th graders have been participating in the Massachusetts STEM Week Challenge through this month. Their students are answering the question, "How can we prepare and inspire people in Massachusetts to pursue STEM careers that have the greatest potential for impact?" Students participating in a Career Fair and presented their persuasive essays and interactive presentations in front of the classmates. We now will have 6 teams present to industry professionals on Friday, October 21st in Boston. Wish them luck!

Flight Day
The Civil Air Patrol came and helped out with stations for Flight Day. Students created hot air balloons, rockets and learned from the CAP pilots. We ended the day with a plane overhead as students launched their hot air balloons.

Students from Amesbury Middle School were chosen by industry professionals to be recognized for their submission to the STEM Week Challenge! You all won three separate awards!!
Alice Moulton was chosen as the first place award recipient for the 6-8 grade band challenge.
Thomas Miller was chosen as the third place award recipient for the 6-8 grade band challenge.
Tristan Rimington was chosen as the first place award recipient for the K-5 grade band challenge.
Students in grades 6-8 were challenged to apply what they learned about human-centered design from Dell Technologies and Bionic Project, Inc. to design an adaptive device for individuals with paralysis, using an applied learning curriculum from Project Lead The Way and Innovative Learning Partners. Students in grades K-5 were challenged to design an original math game inspired by the conceptual math games of ST Math and putting into practice the same creative problem solving skills experts from the New England Aquarium use every day.
In recognition of their hard work and standout ideas, your students have earned an exciting industry experiences from our STEM Week Challenge partners:
Alice and Thomas have earned an opportunity to present and discuss the winning adaptive device design with Dell Technologies executives!
Tristan has earned an opportunity to present the winning game design to the New England Aquarium team!
Additionally, because your students were the first place winners for the K-5 and 6-8 grade band challenges, we are awarding your school with a year of ST Math and a year of a year of Project Lead The Way! More details on these prizes to follow.
Alice Moulton is the STEM Week Challenge champion for Project Lead the Way Massachusetts STEM Week. A research scientist said, ""You did a great job of thinking about extra details, such as the door that opens downward and becomes a shelf to temporarily place things on. Very well thought out and clearly presented project."
Thomas Miller came in 3rd place for the Project Lead the Way Massachusetts STEM Week. An engineer said, “The prototype demonstrated the concept well and I can see the added design features that address the user's challenges.” Excited to discuss his design with Dell Technologies executives!
Tristan Rimington won 1st place for the ST Math Massachusetts STEM Week. A Wetland biologist said, "I loved the concept and graphics of this game! You incorporated both math and biology into a game and did an excellent job troubleshooting and making adjustments for improvement."

In 6th grade students did a ST Math virtual escape room to review for their unit test. JiJi lost his passport so students solved clues to help JiJi to travel. Students had fun being detectives looking for clues.

Mrs. Butler's class played the game 24. This is the start of the Mass STEM Week for them. Students needed to use critical thinking on how to get to the number 24 with the four numbers given. They will introduce the STEM Week Challenge to them on Monday.

In Ms. Varnerin's 8th grade math class they continue to do get to know you activities with math integrated. Students worked on Express Yourself yesterday in class and today they solved each other's expressions or equations. Great to see creativity inside a math classroom.

The first ever AMS STEM Fair was a success! Students projects blew us away. The plastic man, Mr. Foley, was a celebrity today at the STEM fair. He talked to students about the importance of reusable bags. Thank you Mrs. Jackson for getting the donation from Stop and Shop.

Math teacher, Mr. Rinaldi, and science teacher, Mrs. Kezer, came together to teach about micro plastics today in 6th grade. They showed how math and science are connected.

Today in Mr.Smith’s class the STEM Week Challenge started early. Students discussed the pros/cons of plastics and also looked at what the numbers mean on plastics. Concerns were brought up when micro-plastics came up in the conversation.

Students used the Straw Launcher today in Mrs.Hills and Mrs.Firmes class. Students had to aim the launcher through angles and launch energy. From there they had to find the difference between the two integers they landed on.
