Flute Instrument Cleaning and Maintenance
Daily Care
After every use, completely swab out your flute.
Lay flute across lap.
Thread the small part of cloth through the cleaning rod hole and wrap the cloth around the rod to avoid scratching the inside of the flute.
Create a flat lap by putting your heels up on the legs of the chair, raising your knees.
Remove the foot joint, swab the inside of the foot joint 3 times, and place in the case.
Remove the body joint, swab the inside of the body joint 3 times (push the cleaning rod into both sides to clean the entire body) and place in the case.
Swab the inside of the head joint 3 times, wipe the embouchure plate and blow hole, and place in the case.
Put your cleaning rod in your case. Close the lid and latch/zip the case.
Place swab, pencil, and highlighter in pencil pouch.
Keep your binder, lesson book, and instrument in one place so you don’t lose anything!
Carry your flute upright and close to your upper body to prevent bumps.
If you need to set it down, place it in your open case – the action of setting it down should be SILENT!
Never set the flute on a music stand!
Never roll your flute in your lap, as this can bend keys.
Always put your flute completely away when you’re done playing, with all case latches or zippers closed.
Weekly Care
Use your cleaning rod to check that the cork inside your head joint is properly aligned.
Polish flute with silver polishing cloth.
Monthly Care
Wash and dry swab and put it back in pencil pouch.
