Young bands finding innovative ways forward
Ways to keep going in band
Celebrating one of our directors
High School Band recap
Elementary band students have been very busy practicing “Star Wars” and making progress in their lesson books. Mrs. Hauber and Mrs. Todey have helped students with learning and recording their individual or small group lesson groups playing "Star Wars." The individual student videos will be edited together into a virtual concert. The orchestra students (led by Mrs. Park and Mrs. Dishman) will do the same for a performance of “First Scale March”. Watch for an email at the end of the school year with a link to watch the virtual concert. You will be able to share this link with family and friends! It will be a great opportunity to experience all that the students have learned this year and be a way to remember our pandemic school year in the future. Don’t forget to celebrate your student’s success! They have learned a LOT this year!
Belonging
Band gives kids a place to belong. Band is a family. Band provides community and a place where kids can feel confident and safe. Kids, especially middle school kids, need to be a part of something bigger than themselves.
Creativity & Expression
Band enhances creative thinking and is an enriching creative outlet. Band gives us the chance to create beauty, elicit emotion, create that work of art through music. It allows us to teach love, joy, and humanity to the next generation.
Life Skills
Band teaches excellence in all things by achieving excellence in small things. In a world of instant gratification, it teaches students how to handle failure and keep on going. Students get to learn skills needed in today’s workplace: critical thinking, teamwork, leadership, social skills, self discipline, team skills, goal setting and work ethic.
Balance
Band matters to balance our education. It incorporates science, math, language and physical activity. Not every student experiences success in the academic classroom. Band is a great way for students to experience success at school. Band is an activity that involves all students at all levels of interest and ability.
Team Work
Band teaches students to work together in an environment where everyone is important all the time. Kids need positive role models in an atmosphere where kids learn how to respectfully work together towards a goal that is bigger than themselves. It’s team building, problem-solving, skill building hard work that is immensely rewarding.
The Whole Child
Band addresses the social, emotional, and musical needs of students. It increases cognitive reasoning, enhances collaborative works, gives emotional outlet and offers creative thinking. It is a comprehensive education that improves the IQ, creativity, leadership and problem solving in multiple areas of study.

There are many students who missed out on band this year for safety concerns or other pandemic-related reasons. Fifth grade students who did participate in band missed out on the group experience.
The Ames Middle School band instructors are working to create opportunities for all students who want to be in band moving forward! Next year will include easy entry points for every sixth grade student - easing this year’s fifth grade band students into the large group experience, and even creating extra beginner opportunities.
We don’t want a virus to be the reason a student misses out on their band experience! If you know of students who did not do band this year for various reasons, please encourage them to consider starting band at AMS.
It’s been a year of masks, bell covers, Google Meets, audio tracks, recordings, and no concerts, but the AMS band year has also been marked by a lot of learning and fun as well.
The videos below show some different ways we have stayed engaged with band, stayed safe, and made the most of our opportunities, including fun music, marching outside and in the halls, and creating performance videos with in-person and remote students.
The South Central Iowa Bandmasters Association selected fifteen AMS students for their district honor band. Though the pandemic prevented the honor bands from meeting and performing, the following Ames seventh graders were selected based on director recommendations (pictured from left to right): Micaela Sulc, horn; Levi Larsen, clarinet; Jackson Baker, trombone; Sophia Schneider, flute; Sophia Kyveryga, clarinet; and Sophie Chen, clarinet.
Eighth grade students were selected by audition. The audition process this year was an especially challenging video audition that required the students to play eight major scales, the chromatic scale, and two musical excerpts, all in one take. The following eighth grade students successfully auditioned for the honor band:
Lauren Risdal (flute); Carissa Andorf, Brianna Byrne, Steven Huang, and Mick Wu (clarinet); Bowen Fleming, Nathan Poag, and Elio Viatori (alto saxophone); Joseph Payton (trumpet); and Elias Thompson (trombone).
Additionally, Brianna Byrne and Bowen Fleming were honored with selection to the Iowa Bandmasters All-Iowa Eighth Grade Honor Band. Congratulations to our AMS honor band students!
Mickey lights. Ice cream after concerts. “Nice socks.” Fast pass tutorials.
Any student who has participated in 8th grade band at AMS has a trove of inside jokes, success stories, and memories. And this year marks an opportunity to celebrate those memories as we wish a happy retirement to Mr. Ron Ferneau.
Mr. Ferneau came to Ames Middle School in 2003 with teaching experiences at Des Moines-area Catholic elementaries, Dowling Catholic HS, assisting the Drake Marching Band, and Steamboat Rock, East Marshall, North Polk, and Southeast Webster schools. His successes included reaching the Iowa Jazz Championships finals five times, winning with both North Polk and East Marshall.
Mr. Ferneau and his wife Kathy live in Urbandale. Their four adult children - Ryan, Lucy, David, and Kelsey - were each Iowa All-State musicians who continued their music endeavors well beyond their school experiences.
A love for all things Disney is what students remember most about Mr. Ferneau. This love came through every day with Disney videos, ties, stories, Mickey-shaped lights at concerts, and a rotation of medleys that always marked the 8th grade band’s spring concert performance.
We invited current and former students to share what they remember about their experiences from 8th grade band, and we put them all together in the word cloud pictured below. Click on the image to open a PDF, which should enable you to zoom in close and read all the phrases.
We wish Mr. Ferneau all the best moving forward, and on his behalf, we want to encourage you all to pick a nice warm evening this spring and go get some ice cream!
The Ames High School Band students participated in the Ames Solo Ensemble Contest virtually in March. Students prepared a video performance that was sent to adjudicators to evaluate. In addition to ratings, students received written and audio feedback from the adjudicators. A special commendation to each student who prepared music for contest and who improved their own personal performance skills. This season, Jazz 1, Jazz 2, and Jazz 3 were able to perform at the Jazz Encounters Concert, which was held on February 18 and was the first indoor, in-person performance from any band group this year. Selections by Mike Tomaro, Sammy Nestico, Benny Parker, Mike Kamuf, and many more were performed at the concert.
On February 27, Rick Chitty came to AHS to help create a professional recording of all 3 Jazz Bands. The jazz band students came in on a Saturday morning to record the tunes from the Jazz Encounters Concert. Due to COVID-19, Pep Band was a little smaller this year due to space constraints. However, the group was still able to perform at two home games as well as the Boys’ State Basketball tournament held at the Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines. A wide variety of up-tempo, spirited music makes this a popular organization at Ames High.
