The success of the band is directly related to the individual progress that is made by each student in the group. We would like to thank the students, parents, classroom teachers, and the administration for their continuous support of the instrumental music program. We would like to offer some helpful suggestions for you to continue to provide support to your child.
Helpful Pointers to Parents of Fifth Grade Band Students
Students' success on their chosen instrument is of great importance to them, to parents, and to us, the instructors. At each lesson, your child is told what material to practice and how to practice it. However, we realize that many outside factors cause home practice to become a struggle at times. To make practice as productive as possible, we would like to give you some helpful suggestions based on our experiences, first as students and then as teachers. We hope that the following suggestions will help you to help your child at home.
Mrs. Cheryl Todey joins 5th grade staff
The Ames Band program is thrilled to welcome Mrs. Cheryl Todey to their staff as a 5th grade instructor. Mrs. Todey is an experienced educator whose career has focused on teaching students in 5th-8th grade school bands and privately as a piano and band instrument instructor. Mrs. Todey previously taught in Brookings, South Dakota, working with over 200 students in middle school band. Since returning to Ames in 2016, she has enjoyed working with students one-on-one in her private music studio.
As an Iowa State grad, she is thrilled to be back in Ames to celebrate everything Iowa State. Mrs. Todey, with her husband Dennis, have four children: Patrick, Douglas, Marie, and Emma. Each of their children are active musicians, with current or recent experience in Ames and ISU bands.
On joining the Ames program, Mrs. Todey said, “I love helping students discover the joy of music and to grow in their ability to express themselves through music. I look forward to being a part of the amazing Ames band tradition and helping our 5th graders to begin their band journey!”

This annual event involves students from more than seventy school districts. Students will rehearse with guest conductors during the day, then perform an evening concert.
Seventh graders are recommended by individual instructors and then selected by a SCIBA committee. To balance instrumentation within each band, a limited number of students from each school are chosen. Representing AMS are Steven Huang (clarinet) and Bowen Flemming (alto sax).
Eighth grade students are selected based on live auditions. Students auditioned in Waukee on Tuesday, October 1st. Those selected from AMS include Mary Greenfield, Jenny Park, Kritika Sharma, Jesse Yates, (flute); Hannah Song, Karina Scott (clarinet); Max Kovalenko (alto sax); Elena Heerema (bassoon); Anleah Walker (F horn) and Sawyer Chopskie (percussion). All 10 of the AMS eighth grade musicians selected earned spots in the top SCIBA band.
Additionally, Max Kovalenko, Hannah Song, Elena Heerema and Anleah Walker earned selection to the Iowa Bandmasters Association All-Iowa 8th Grade Honor Band. That group will meet and perform in May.
Congratulations to all AMS students selected for the SCIBA Honor Band Festival!

The Little Cyclone Marching Band played the music of Jay Bocook, Bon Jovi, Van Halen, and Blood, Sweat & Tears for their 2019 marching season. On Sept. 7, they performed in the annual Pufferbilly Days Parade in Boone. The marching band also had an exciting opportunity to play with the Iowa State University Cyclone Football 'Varsity' Marching Band at the Little Cy-Hawk game versus Iowa City. With only one night of practice, the 630 combined marching band members played the music of Billie Eilish and the ISU Fight Song. During halftime, the ISU Marching Band played the halftime show that they performed for the Cy-Hawk game the following day. On Oct. 28, the AHS Marching Band closed the season with their Marching Band Spectacular, playing every tune from the 2019 season!
