Section 1: Inquiry Question and Concept Exploration
Inquiry Statement: How can layering, color blending, and composition choices transform an everyday object into a compelling and realistic work of art?
Layering, color blending, and composition choices can completely transform an ordinary object into a powerful and realistic artwork because they let the artist control depth, light, and emotion. By layering colors, artists can build gradual tones and textures that make flat surfaces appear three-dimensional. Color blending helps create smooth transitions between shades, making objects look more natural and life-like instead of harsh or flat. Finally, composition, the way the object is placed and balanced in the artwork, guides the viewer’s eyes and adds importance to something simple. Together, these techniques allow artists to turn something everyday, like a cup or fruit, into a visually rich piece that captures attention and feels real, showing that art isn’t about what you draw, but how you bring it to life.

Why: Candies are simple, everyday objects that can become visually striking through color and light. Their shiny surfaces and bright tones allowed me to experiment with layering and blending techniques to show depth and realism. By focusing on something ordinary, I wanted to prove that even small, familiar things can be transformed into compelling works of art through careful observation and technique
Section 6: Communicate and Reflect:
In this artwork, I explored the inquiry question, “How can layering, color blending, and composition choices transform an everyday object into a compelling and realistic work of art?” Throughout the process, one of my greatest challenges was mastering accurate shading and capturing the subtle transitions between light and shadow. At first, my shadows looked flat or too harsh, but by experimenting with layering and gentle pressure control, I learned how to build gradual depth and form. A major success was achieving rich color value without ever using black or pencil, instead, I deepened tones through strategic color mixing and blending, which gave the objects a natural glow and realistic dimension. The composition also helped guide the viewer’s eye across the page, emphasizing the contrast between warm and cool tones. Overall, this piece demonstrates how thoughtful layering and blending can elevate even ordinary candies into a vibrant, lifelike composition that captures both realism and artistic expression.
